"Great lessons begin long before a teacher enters the water."

Every Nereids lesson begins with trust.

Families invite us into their homes.

Adults place their confidence in our guidance.

And parents trust us with something incredibly important - their children.

That is why we place so much care into how we select, train, and support the swim teachers who represent Nereids.

More Than A Swim Teacher

When most people think about swimming lessons, they naturally focus on the swim teacher standing beside them in the water.

And while great teachers are incredibly important, we believe great lessons begin long before that moment.

Behind every Nereids swim teacher is a process designed to help ensure families and adults receive safe, professional, and supportive guidance throughout their journey.

This responsibility is something we take seriously.

After all, our swim teachers work with children, adults, and families in highly personal learning environments, often within the comfort of their own homes.

That level of trust is never taken for granted.

Over the years, we have learned that exceptional swimming lessons are about much more than technical knowledge alone.

They require communication.

Patience.

Professionalism.

Care.

And a genuine commitment to helping others learn and grow.

That is why teacher quality has always been one of the most important parts of the Nereids experience.

This page will take you on a journey behind the scenes and show how we select, train, support, and develop the swim teachers who represent Nereids today.

We Hire Carefully

Every year, hundreds of people apply to join the Nereids team.

Many are passionate about swimming.

Many already hold qualifications.

And many genuinely want to help others learn.

But not everyone is invited to move forward.

Over the years, we have chosen to prioritise quality over quantity when building our team.

As a result, only a small percentage of applicants are typically offered a position.

In many seasons, fewer than 5% progress through the entire process and join Nereids.

There is a reason we take this approach.

The families and adults we support place a great deal of trust in us.

We believe that trust should be earned through careful selection, high standards, and a commitment to finding the right people for the role.

That is why our hiring process includes multiple stages of interviews, assessments, and evaluations before a teacher is invited to join the team.

Because while swimming lessons may appear simple on the surface, the people delivering them play an important role in shaping a student's experience.

One principle has guided us since Nereids was founded in 2015:

We would rather continue searching than lower our standards.

More Than Qualifications

Qualifications are important.

They help ensure swim teachers have the technical knowledge needed to teach safely and effectively.

But over the years, we've learned that qualifications alone do not create great learning experiences.

Some of the qualities that matter most cannot be found on a certificate.

Care.

Professionalism.

Integrity.

And a genuine desire to help others grow.

A swim teacher may have excellent technical knowledge or credentials, but if they don’t connect with students, build trust, or create a positive learning environment, that knowledge can only go so far.

That is why our selection process looks beyond paperwork and certifications.

We look for people who genuinely enjoy helping and guiding others.

People who remain calm, patient, and professional when challenges arise.

And people who understand that every student learns differently.

People who truly care.

Because while swimming lessons involve skills, techniques, and water safety, they are ultimately about people.

And a great swim teacher truly sees the human behind the lesson.

Certificates & Safety Standards

Working with children, adults, and families comes with significant responsibility.

That is why every Nereids swim teacher must meet a range of safety, legal, and professional requirements before they are able to teach under the Nereids banner.

These requirements include:

  • Working With Children Check (WWCC)
  • Police Clearance Checks
  • Current First Aid and CPR Qualifications
  • Recognised Australian Swim Teaching Qualifications

These requirements help ensure that every teacher has met important professional and safety standards before entering a student's learning environment.

However, compliance is only one part of the process.

Documentation must be reviewed, verified, and maintained as part of our ongoing commitment to quality and accountability.

Teachers are also required to comply with Nereids' internal policies and safeguarding standards, including our Child Safety Policy, which helps guide how we create safe and professional learning environments for children and families.

As qualifications and certifications expire over time, our team continues monitoring and verifying compliance to help ensure teachers maintain current requirements in accordance with Australian regulations.

Nereids swim teachers are employed by Nereids and work within the company's systems, standards, and insurance framework.

This includes multi-million dollar public liability insurance designed to provide an additional layer of protection and peace of mind for families and adults learning with us.

Because when inviting someone into your home or trusting them with your learning journey, safety and professionalism should never be left to chance.

Assessed Before Coming to You

Hiring a teacher is only one part of the process.

Even after interviews are completed and qualifications are verified, new teachers are not immediately assigned to families.

Before teaching you or your family, they must first complete training and be assessed by some of Nereids' most experienced swim teachers and mentors.

These mentors play an important role in helping new teachers develop their skills, understand Nereids standards, and prepare for real lessons with students.

They are also responsible for making the final recommendation on whether a teacher is ready to represent Nereids.

In other words, before a teacher is matched with a family or adult student, they have already been reviewed and assessed by experienced members of the Nereids team.

This additional layer of support and evaluation helps ensure that our teachers are not only qualified, but also prepared to deliver lessons that reflect the standards, philosophy, and expectations of Nereids.

Because qualifications can open the door.

But integrity and readiness must be demonstrated.

A Team Behind Every Teacher

When a swim teacher joins Nereids, their development does not stop there.

Behind every teacher is a wider support network designed to help them continue learning, growing, and delivering the best possible experience for students.

This support may come from experienced mentors, supervisors, and senior team members who help guide teachers throughout their journey.

Depending on the situation, this may include feedback, coaching, lesson observations, professional guidance, and additional support when needed.

Our goal is to guide them to continue improving and growing.

Just as we encourage students to keep learning, we believe great teachers should continue learning too.

This ongoing support helps maintain consistency across the Nereids experience while giving teachers access to the guidance and knowledge of some of the most experienced members of our team.

Because great teachers are developed through a supportive and experienced community.

And our team remains beside them every step of the way.

Learning Never Stops

One of the values we encourage in our students is the belief that learning never truly ends.

The same philosophy applies to our swim teachers.

After joining Nereids, teachers continue developing their skills through ongoing learning, mentorship, practical experience, and professional growth opportunities.

As they gain experience, many deepen their knowledge of teaching, communication, water safety, and student development.

Some teachers also choose to take on additional responsibilities and leadership roles within the organisation.

Over the years, several of our experienced teachers have progressed into mentor and leadership roles, where they help support, guide, and develop newer members of the team.

This creates a cycle of learning that benefits everyone involved.

Teachers continue growing.

Mentors continue sharing their experience.

And students benefit from a team that remains committed to learning and improvement.

Because the best teachers are the ones who continue growing throughout their journey.

Matching Matters

Every student is different.

And just as we personalise learning, we also take great care when matching students with a swim teacher.

When creating a match, our team considers a variety of factors, including location, availability, learning goals, experience levels, and individual preferences.

But practical factors are only part of the picture.

Over the years, we have learned that some of the best learning experiences are built on strong relationships.

The ability to communicate well.

To build trust.

To create a positive and supportive environment.

These things matter too.

That is why we look beyond schedules and logistics when recommending a teacher.

We aim to find a match that gives students the best possible opportunity to learn, grow, and enjoy their journey in the water.

We take great care when matching families and adults with a swim teacher because great learning often begins with the right relationship.

If Circumstances Change, We're Here To Help

While careful matching helps create strong long-term relationships, we also understand that every person is unique.

On the rare occasion that a family or adult feels another teacher may be a better fit, our team is here to help explore alternative options and provide ongoing support.

Because our commitment is not simply to a teacher assignment.

It is to the student's experience and progress.

Your Journey Is Supported

Finding the right swim teacher is important.

But for us, the relationship with a student does not begin and end with a teacher match.

When families and adults join Nereids, they become part of a wider support system designed to help them throughout their swimming journey.

That means our team remains available to assist with scheduling, lesson planning, teacher support, program guidance, and any changes that may arise along the way.

While careful matching helps create strong and lasting teacher-student relationships, we also understand that every person's journey is unique.

Occasionally, circumstances change.

Goals evolve.

Schedules shift.

Or a different teaching style may become more suitable for a student's needs.

When that happens, our team is here to help explore options and provide guidance.

Because our commitment has never been limited to assigning a teacher.

Our commitment is to helping students continue progressing with confidence and support.

While careful matching makes this uncommon, our team remains available to support families and adults throughout their journey.

The Nereids Promise

We have taken you on a journey behind the scenes and shared how we select, train, support, and develop the swim teachers who represent Nereids.

Since Nereids was founded in 2015, these principles have helped guide how we build and support our team.

Along the way, we've explored the importance of character.

Qualifications.

Safety standards.

Training.

Mentorship.

Ongoing development.

Careful matching.

And the support systems that help teachers and students throughout their journey.

At first, these may seem like separate parts of a larger process.

For us, they are all connected.

Together, they reflect the standards we strive to uphold for every family and adult who chooses to learn with Nereids.

We believe every student deserves a swim teacher who is prepared, supported, and genuinely committed to helping them grow.

We believe great teaching is built on more than technical knowledge alone.

And we believe trust is earned through consistency, care, professionalism, and integrity.

That belief continues guiding how we select, train, support, and retain great teachers.

That is the Nereids Promise.

What Real Families Say About Nereids
Hayley Woodrow

Our son was far behind his peers and afraid to even put his face in the water. Just 5 lessons later, he’s swimming confidently and going under with joy.

Reem Essam

As an adult with some fear of water — and not a native English speaker — I felt a big difference after just one lesson. By my 7th session, I could swim a full lap. My teacher was kind, patient, and made it fun.
